About us

Our global perspective is rooted in local classrooms.

WHO WE ARE

Teach History Now is led by Maureen McCorry, lifelong educator, practitioner and coach. Maureen has taught US and world history, world cultures and geography, government, economics, and contemporary foreign policy for twenty years.

Maureen’s expertise includes interdisciplinary course design that incorporates service and civic action, leveraging partnerships with artists, scholars, diplomats, government agencies, and community-based organizations from Modesto to Silicon Valley.

Travel, especially to China, Chile, Cuba, Iran, Israel/Palestine and Mexico, has transformed her teaching and world view. As a methods professor and supervisor to credential candidates at Brandman and Stanislaus State University, Maureen has promoted instruction and lesson design that is rigorous, culturally responsive, and develops student voice and agency.

Most recently, Maureen initiated the launch of the Central Valley site of the California Global Education Project at Stanislaus State and served as its inaugural director. Currently, she serves as the Central Valley regional representative for Human Rights Educators, USA.

Maureen has also led an environmental grassroots non-profit, advised first-gen college graduates on behalf of COOP Careers and Stanislaus State, and volunteers for the International Rescue Committee.

what we believe

  1. History is never boring.

  2. We cannot maintain a civil society or stable democratic republic without history education.

  3. Content expertise is as important as instructional strategy — we can’t teach what we don’t know.

  4. Content should drive instructional strategies — from inquiry to assessment.

  5. Contemporary issues will get students talking, thinking, writing, and civically engaged.

  6. Students learn when teachers lead with depth, not coverage.

  7. Demands for diversity, equity, and inclusion in education are not new.  It’s time for action.

  8. College Board history is not comprehensive or inclusive.

  9. The skills required to succeed in Advanced Placement are essential for ALL students.

  10. Professional learning should model for teachers what we envision for students.
